How University of Montreal Talent and a 159 Million Dollars Gift will change Materials Sciences in Canada and Beyond

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Montreal has created the Institut Courtois thanks to an exceptional gift of 159M dollars, the biggest gift in Canadian History for fundamental research in natural sciences. This Institute will be devoted to ambitious research at the intersection of advanced materials, quantum physics and AI, at the crossroads between chemistry, physics and computer science. While the exceptional generosity of the Courtois Foundation attracts the attention, the underlying philosophy and vision are what sets the Institute apart: how do we use Robotics and AI to accelerate every step of scientific discovery? How do we equip our scientists so they can make transformative discoveries that will lead us to novel batteries, better utilization of critical minerals, and radically new ways of printing and using solar panels. How to organize the governance and funding of such an institute to make sure that we remain at the bleeding edge of science in these areas and not fall back on the predictable and comfortable? In this presentation, we will explore the philosophy, vision, ambition, governance and funding of this new research institute.
