Matt McCandless

IISD Experimental Lakes Area Inc.

Matthew (Matt) M. McCandless is a biosystems engineer working on sustainable development for over 20 years. Since 2014 he has been the executive director of IISD Experimental Lakes Area Inc. (IISD-ELA), the world’s freshwater laboratory, where he leads a team of 30 researchers and engineers who study some of the world’s most complex ecological problems. Matt’s research interests are primarily in the areas of hydrology, water quality and bioprocessing–often combining both policy and technical research. He has worked on water, agriculture and bioindustrial development in all over the world. He has a Ph.D. in biosystems engineering from the University of Manitoba, a Master of Natural Resources Management from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Biological Engineering from Dalhousie University. Matt is a registered professional engineer.

Fifty-five years of impactful ecological science

Matt’s presentation will provide background of whole-ecosystem experimentation: how what it is, what we learn from it, and how it has led to new innovation for the environment. The presentation will trace some of the innovative research that has been done to address complex ecological problems and how solutions were pinpointed. The presentation will then consider some new and emerging challenges, and the approaches that are being taken to address them.
