Talk Description

The Technical and Economic Viability of Space Access Infrastructure

Achieving world-wide carbon neutrality by 2050 is the world’s most urgent mission. At the same time human civilization must set up and maintain supply-lines to new space stations and colonies on the moon and Mars. Investment in infrastructure can substantially reduce the cost and environmental impact of this mission. A Tethered Ring is a technically viable architecture based on well-established heritage technologies that can be built with materials that are already in mass production. It is also supported by a business plan for servicing the debt incurred to build it. This presentation will discuss the economics of accessing space, explain what a "Tethered Ring" is and how it works, and show why it "pencils out" in light of our ambitious goal to become a carbon-neutral, multi-planet civilization.
