Seung Soo is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree at McGill University in the department of Experimental Medicine. His research focuses on the development of a nanoparticle-based theranostic platform for targeted photothermal therapy against various types of cancer. He is also interested in elucidating the role of photothermal therapy in the tumor microenvironment and the potential application of laser-based treatment in cancer immunotherapy. He has obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto, completed his M.Sc. at McGill University, and has two years of industry experience working on albumin nanoparticles and ultrasound systems.

TSHR-targeting Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Precision Photothermal Therapy

Photothermal therapy using light-sensitive nanoparticles has gained increasing interest over the last decade. For a successful photothermal ablation protocol, three key criteria need to be addressed; 1) predictive pre-operational planning, 2) real-time monitoring of tumor ablation, and 3) post-operational follow-up to ensure complete response with minimal side effects. Here, we introduce thyroid hormone stimulating receptor (TSHR) antibody-functionalized MWCNTs as an enhanced tumor targeting and light-absorbing device for the photoablation of BCPAP papillary thyroid cancer cell xenograft mouse model. We have also developed a COMSOL-based model to accurately predict the changes in the internal temperature during the laser treatment session, which ensures the accuracy of the real-time monitoring of the tumor ablation leading to a complete response with minimal side effects.
