Ziheng is a Physics MSc student at the University of Calgary, with specialization in Quantum Information. His research in Dr. Daniel Oblak’s group focuses on satellite-based quantum communication experiments at the ground station, as well as developing algorithms for the post-processing of quantum communication, in collaboration with University of Science and Technology of China. In his spare time, he likes to play video games and his guitar.

How are we integrating quantum technologies into everyday life?

Talk Description

Quantum Link to Low-Earth Orbit Satellite

Quantum key distribution (QKD) involves the use of photons in quantum superposition states to achieve provably secure communication between the sender and receiver. While channel loss in optical fibers limits the QKD range to around a few hundred kilometers, satellite-based QKD can overcome this limitation and help accomplish secure and efficient quantum communication on a global scale. We have successfully established quantum communication links between our ground station in Calgary and Micius, a low-earth orbit quantum satellite, using the decoy-state BB84 protocol. Being the first in the western hemisphere to establish such link, our demonstration is an essential step towards building an intercontinental quantum communication network.
