Judith Young

Retired Director General

National Research Council Canada

Judith Young began her 37-year career at the National Research Council as a researcher studying how to measure formaldehyde gas. She switched early on to administration and then into management where she spent most of her time convincing executives, funders and business people to support researchers and to develop technology. Her career included heading NRC's corporate business development and Intellectual Property office, and its Entrepreneurship Office wherein NRC spun off people and technology. She also led groups in government relations and in international relations. While leading the team that supported one of NRC's VPs, Judith won an NRC Award of Excellence for helping establish NRC's Nanotechnology lab here in Edmonton. She recognizes that 'convergence', 'innovation' and 'collaboration' are just as essential in the activities supporting research as they are in research.
